Superschmelz, Kohlrabi,
Superschmelz is a giant heirloom from Switzerland that grows uniformly large and still remains sweet and tender. Light green Superschmelz kohlrabi makes the largest bulb of any variety, up to 10 inches across, and can weigh up to 10 LB! Yet the flesh is tender and never gets fibrous. It requires very rich soil and plenty of space to reach gigantic proportions. Best to harvest the kohlrabi a bit bigger than softball size. Wonderful in soups, stews, slaws, salads, and stir fry. Best of all, Superschmelz makes awesome! Highly recommended!!! 60-70 days
Start seeds 4-6 weeks before your last frost date. Sow in a sterile seedling mix. Keep the seedbed moist for the best germination. Transplant outside when there are 6-8 true leaves and nighttime temperatures remain above 30°: F. Direct seed outdoors as soon as the ground can be worked in the spring. Sow seeds in rows 12-18 inches apart. Keep the seedbed moist. For tender, sweet, spring-sown kohlrabi, harvest when less than 4 inches in diameter. Fall-grown kohlrabi is less likely to get woody as it gets larger. Kohlrabi is hardy to about 10°F.
