Superschmelz (Brassica oleracea var. gongylodes) is a giant heirloom from Switzerland that grows uniformly large and still remains sweet and tender — the largest bulb of any kohlrabi variety, up to 10 inches across and weighing up to 10 lbs. Yet the flesh is tender and never gets fibrous, even at large sizes. Requires rich soil and plenty of space to reach gigantic proportions. Best harvested a bit bigger than softball size. Wonderful in soups, stews, slaws, salads, and stir-fry. Highly recommended. 60–70 days. 100+ seeds per packet.
Start seeds 4–6 weeks before last frost in sterile seedling mix. Keep seedbed moist for best germination. Transplant outside when 6–8 true leaves appear and nighttime temperatures stay above 30°F. Direct sow outdoors as soon as the ground can be worked. Sow in rows 12–18 inches apart. Requires very rich soil and plenty of space. Best harvested at softball size or slightly larger. Fall-grown kohlrabi is less likely to get woody as it gets larger. Cold hardy to about 10°F.
