French Viroflay Spinach, Heirloom Seeds — The Gourmet French Heirloom Developed Before 1866

Viroflay is the gourmet French spinach — a large-leaved heirloom developed before 1866 and prized for its low-acid taste and exceptional quality. Where common spinach can be sharp and metallic, Viroflay is mild and satisfying — excellent steamed or boiled for nutritious greens, and equally good raw in salads. A very fast-growing variety that is particularly popular for fall planting, when its mild flavor and tender texture are at their best. An excellent choice for home gardens and market growers alike. 50 days.

Why Grow French Viroflay Spinach?

  • Pre-1866 French heirloom — over 160 years of proven garden performance
  • Low-acid, mild flavor — noticeably less sharp than common spinach varieties
  • Large, tender leaves — excellent raw in salads or steamed as nutritious greens
  • Very fast-growing — popular for fall planting when flavor is at its best
  • Excellent for home and market gardens — reliable and productive
  • Open-pollinated heirloom — save seed year after year

Growing Notes

Direct sow outdoors in early spring (4–6 weeks before last frost) or in late summer for fall harvest — spinach prefers cool weather. Sow seeds ½ inch deep, 2 inches apart, in rows 12 inches apart. Thin to 6 inches. Full sun to part shade. Keep soil consistently moist. Harvest outer leaves continuously or cut whole plant at soil level. Bolts in heat — succession sow for continuous harvest.
