Spacemaster 80 (Cucumis sativus) is the cucumber for gardeners who refuse to let limited space limit their harvest. This compact bush variety produces 2–3 foot vines with no runners — perfect for containers, hanging baskets, raised beds, and small garden plots — yet bears a full crop of dark green, smooth, slender, uniform 7–8 inch cucumbers with mild, slightly sweet, crisp flesh. Resistant to Cucumber Mosaic Virus, Downy Mildew, Powdery Mildew, and Scab. Adaptable to a wide range of climates. Deer resistant. Monoecious. 60–65 days.
Direct sow 1–2 weeks after last frost (preferred) or start indoors 3–4 weeks before transplanting. Sow 1 inch deep, 18–24 inches apart in rows 48 inches apart in rich, well-draining soil (pH 6.0–6.8) in full sun. Germination temperature 75–85°F. Optimal growing temperature 64–86°F — frost-sensitive; damaged below 50°F. Compact habit means no trellis required, though vertical support improves airflow. Water consistently. As a monoecious variety, plants produce both male and female flowers — insect or hand pollination required. Harvest at 7–8 inches; harvest frequently to keep vines producing. Use pruning shears — do not pull.
Watch for: Snails, aphids, cutworms, spider mites, squash vine borers, and cucumber beetles. Practice crop rotation to reduce pest and disease pressure.
