Shogoin (Brassica rapa) is a Japanese heirloom turnip producing large white globe roots β most tender when bulbs reach 4 inches in diameter β with broad leaves growing nearly 2 feet tall. Quick-growing and heat-tolerant, yet frost-hardy and sweeter in cool weather. Grown for both its roots and its leaves. Exceptional for pickling, soups, salads, and stir-fries. 30β60 days.
Direct sow outdoors in early spring or late summer for fall harvest. Sow seeds ΒΌ inch deep, 1 inch apart, in rows 12 inches apart. Thin to 4β6 inches for root production. Full sun to part shade. Keep soil consistently moist. Harvest roots when bulbs reach 4 inches; harvest greens at any stage.
