Sandy (Lactuca sativa) made history in 2015 as the first lettuce to win an All-America Selections award since 1985 — and it earned it. A compact, dark green oakleaf variety with crisp, ruffled leaves and a sweet, mild flavor, Sandy matures in just 30–50 days and produces 10–12-inch heads ideal for containers or garden beds. Very slow to bolt, maintains excellent texture and taste even in heat, and resists powdery mildew, downy mildew, and tip burn. An outstanding choice for both home and market growers.
Direct sow outdoors in early spring or late summer, or start indoors 4–6 weeks before last frost. Sow seeds ¼ inch deep, thinning to 8–10 inches apart. Excellent heat tolerance and bolt resistance — suitable for spring and summer planting. Water consistently. Harvest leaf by leaf for cut-and-come-again, or harvest as a full head. 30–50 days from direct sow.
