Rouge D’Hiver — The 1840 French Heirloom Romaine That Deepens Red in Cold Weather

Rouge D’Hiver — French for “Red Winter” — is a French heirloom romaine dating to approximately 1840, and the name perfectly captures its character. Red and green leaves with deep red tips form compact, semi-open romaine heads with a tender green heart surrounded by striking bronze-red outer leaves. The color deepens and intensifies in cold weather, making Rouge D’Hiver one of the most beautiful lettuces in the fall garden. Cold tolerant and resistant to tip burn, it thrives in cooler conditions and is ideal for fall planting. Compact 12-inch heads with good flavor. 62 days.

Why Grow Rouge D’Hiver?

  • French heirloom ca. 1840 — nearly 200 years of cultivation
  • Deepens red in cold weather — most beautiful in fall and cool conditions
  • Frost & tip-burn resistant — extends the harvest season
  • Compact 12-inch heads — tender green heart, bronze-red outer leaves
  • Ideal for fall planting — thrives when other lettuces struggle
  • Open-pollinated heirloom — save seed year after year

Growing Notes

Direct sow outdoors or start indoors 3–4 weeks before transplanting. Sow seeds ⅛ inch deep — lettuce seeds need light to germinate, so barely cover. Space or thin to 12 inches apart in rows 18 inches apart. Full sun to part shade. Keep soil consistently moist. For fall harvest, sow 6–8 weeks before first frost. Harvest outer leaves when 6 inches long for cut-and-come-again, or cut the whole head 1 inch from the soil — a new head will form.
