Rhubarb Swiss Chard — Stunning Crimson Stalks, Long Season Harvests, Beautiful in Any Garden

Rhubarb Swiss Chard is as beautiful as it is productive. Brilliant crimson stalks, midribs, and veins contrast dramatically with dark green, heavily crumpled, slightly savoyed leaves — a plant that earns its place in the ornamental garden as much as the vegetable bed. Mature plants grow to about 2 feet tall and are vigorous, long-season producers that deliver fresh greens from early summer all the way into fall, and year-round in mild climates.

Young leaves are tender and excellent in salads; mature leaves are outstanding braised, sautéed, or added to soups. A great container variety, and recommended by Utah State University for home garden performance.

Why Grow Rhubarb Swiss Chard?

  • Stunning crimson stalks & veins — beautiful contrast with dark green crumpled leaves
  • Long season producer — fresh greens from early summer through fall
  • Dual harvest — young leaves for salads, mature leaves for cooking
  • Great container variety — compact, productive, and ornamentally beautiful
  • Recommended by USU — proven home garden performance
  • Open-pollinated heirloom — save seed year after year

Growing Notes

Direct sow outdoors 2–4 weeks before last frost, or start indoors 4 weeks before transplanting. Sow seeds ½ inch deep, 2–3 inches apart, in rows 18 inches apart. Thin to 6–8 inches for full-sized plants. Water consistently. Harvest outer leaves regularly to encourage continuous production — the plant will keep producing new growth from the center. Can be sown again in late summer for a fall harvest.
