Red Rubin Basil, Heirloom Herb Seeds — Deep Purple Leaves, Bold Spicy Flavor, Too Beautiful for the Herb Garden

Red Rubin is the basil that stops people in their tracks. A dark-purple variety in both leaf and stem, Red Rubin produces large, Italian-style leaves with a rich, bold, spicy flavor and a wonderful fragrance that rivals any green basil — but with a dramatic visual presence that makes it as at home in an ornamental bed as in the herb garden. The deep purple foliage creates a stunning contrast against green herbs and vegetables, and the leaves infuse vinegars and oils with a gorgeous ruby-red color. Use fresh in salads, pestos, and as a garnish, or dry for a spicy, aromatic seasoning. 68 days.

Why Grow Red Rubin Basil?

  • Deep purple leaves and stems — one of the most ornamental basils available
  • Bold, spicy flavor with wonderful fragrance — rivals any green basil in the kitchen
  • Large Italian-style leaves — excellent for pesto, salads, and garnishes
  • Infuses vinegars and oils ruby-red — stunning in the kitchen and on the table
  • Ornamental and culinary — beautiful in herb gardens, borders, and containers
  • Open-pollinated heirloom — save seed year after year

Growing Notes

Start indoors 4–6 weeks before last frost. Sow seeds ¼ inch deep in fertile, well-draining soil. Transplant outdoors after all frost danger has passed and nights are consistently above 50°F, spacing plants 12–18 inches apart in full sun. Pinch flower buds as they appear to encourage bushy growth and continued leaf production. Harvest regularly for best flavor and productivity. Cold temperatures cause blackening of leaves.
