Red Express (Brassica oleracea var. capitata) is the earliest developing red cabbage we carry — bred to do better in northern climates where it matures quickly and performs reliably. Very uniform, tight, and compact with an amazing deep purple color that impressed us in our 2010 cabbage trials. A medium-sized cabbage that can be spaced much closer than other varieties, making it ideal for raised beds and intensive gardens. 2–4 pound heads are great for slaw, stir-fry, or salads. 63 days.
Start indoors 4–6 weeks before last frost. Transplant outdoors spacing plants closer than standard varieties — compact habit makes efficient use of garden space. Plant in full sun in fertile, well-drained soil. Water consistently. Harvest at 63 days when heads are firm, solid, and deeply colored.
