Red Burgundy Onion, Heirloom Seeds — The Short-Day Southern Heirloom With a 3–4” Glossy Burgundy Globe and Exceptionally Mild, Sweet Flavor

Red Burgundy (Allium cepa) is a classic short-day heirloom onion originating in Central Asia, perfectly suited for Southern regions (Zones 7–10). It produces beautiful 3–4 inch flattened globe bulbs with glossy, dark burgundy-red skin and off-white flesh threaded with attractive red rings. The flavor is exceptionally mild and sweet — among the mildest of all red onions — making it a standout fresh-eating and slicing variety. The green tops can be harvested and used as green onions throughout the growing season. Best enjoyed fresh from the garden — does not store long-term. 100–120 days.

Why Grow Red Burgundy?

  • Glossy 3–4” burgundy-red globe — beautiful, flattened, dark red skin with striking red-ringed flesh
  • Exceptionally mild & sweet — one of the mildest red onions; no harsh bite
  • Dual harvest — thin tops throughout the season and use as green onions
  • Excellent companion plant — deters insect pests around lettuce, cabbage, and carrots
  • Short-day Southern variety — thrives in Zones 7–10; plant in fall for spring harvest
  • Good Pink Root tolerance — reliable performer in Southern gardens
  • Open-pollinated heirloom — save seed year after year

In the Kitchen

Slice thin and layer into salads, sandwiches, and burgers — the mild, sweet flavor shines raw. Dice into stir-fries, salsas, and fresh relishes. Use in pasta dishes and on baked potatoes as a garnish. Pickle in red wine vinegar for a vibrant condiment. The green tops are delicious as a green onion garnish on eggs, soups, and pasta. Note: Red Burgundy does not store well — plan to use within a few weeks of harvest at its flavor peak.

Companion Planting

Red Burgundy is an excellent companion plant — the sulfur compounds in onions deter aphids, carrot flies, and other insect pests. Plant alongside lettuce, cabbage, carrots, and brassicas to protect neighboring crops naturally.

Growing Notes

In Southern regions (Zones 7–10): direct sow or transplant in fall for a spring harvest. In Northern regions: start indoors in late winter and transplant outdoors in early spring. Sow ¼ inch deep in fertile, well-draining soil (pH 6.0–6.8) in full sun — onions need excellent drainage to prevent mildew and rot. Space 4–6 inches apart. Thin tops throughout the season and use as green onions. Harvest when tops begin to fall over and dry. Cure briefly and use fresh — does not store well long-term.
