Red Beard Bunching Onion β€” The Rare Asian Heirloom With Striking Red-White-Green Tricolor and a Mini-Leek Appearance

Red Beard is a rare and hard-to-find Asian bunching onion variety that is as beautiful as it is practical. Growing 8–12 inches tall with tiny bulbs, Red Beard looks like elegant mini leeks β€” with a striking tricolor of red at the base, white in the middle, and lush green tops that make it one of the most visually distinctive scallions in the garden. A day-neutral variety, it can be planted at any time of year regardless of day length, and it is cold-hardy enough to overwinter in zones 6 and above. Mild and versatile, Red Beard is excellent fresh in salads, as a garnish, or anywhere a colorful scallion is called for. 50–75 days.

Growing Notes

Direct sow outdoors or start indoors at any time of year β€” day-neutral, no day-length restrictions. Sow seeds ΒΌ inch deep, 1 inch apart, in rows 12 inches apart in full sun. Thin to 2–3 inches apart. Keep soil consistently moist. For overwintering in zones 6+, sow in late summer and mulch lightly before frost.
