The rattlesnake bean is an heirloom variety of pole bean (Phaseolus vulgaris). The pods measure 6 to 8 inches in length and are characterized by distinctive purple markings. The seeds are light brown with brown markings, which remain visible even after cooking. The name "rattlesnake bean" comes from the way the pods coil around the vine, resembling a snake. Rattlesnake beans thrive in hot climates, particularly in the American Southeast and mid-Atlantic regions, but they can also be successfully grown in other areas. The time from germination to harvest varies from 60 to 90 days, falling within the average to long range.
