Purple Top White Globe (Brassica rapa) is the classic American heirloom turnip — smooth, round roots averaging 3–4 inches in diameter, white below the soil line and bright purple above, with large lobed greens that are excellent cooked. A dual-harvest crop: harvest the greens throughout the season, then pull the roots at full maturity. Frost enhances the flavor of both roots and greens, making this an exceptional fall crop. 55 days.
Direct sow outdoors 4–6 weeks before last frost in spring, or in late summer for fall harvest. Sow seeds ¼ inch deep, 1 inch apart, in rows 12 inches apart. Thin to 4–6 inches for root production. Full sun to part shade. Keep soil consistently moist. Harvest greens as needed; harvest roots at 55 days when 3–4 inches in diameter.
