Purple Tomatillo (Physalis ixocarpa) is a scarce Mexican heirloom variety that stands apart from every other tomatillo in the garden. Starting light green and ripening to a gorgeous dark purple β inside and out β the fruit is noticeably larger than traditional green tomatillos and far sweeter, with a slightly tangy finish and less of the sticky coating that comes with green varieties. Used in Mexican dishes, salsas, and sauces, Purple Tomatillo brings both visual drama and outstanding flavor to the kitchen. 85 days from transplant.
Start indoors 6β8 weeks before last frost. Transplant outdoors after frost danger has passed, spacing plants 24β36 inches apart in full sun. Important: Tomatillos will not self-pollinate β plant two or more plants (any tomatillo variety) for good fruit production. Harvest when fruits burst through their husks and turn dark purple.
