Purple Passion — The Heirloom Asparagus With Deep Purple Spears, 20% More Sugar, and Unmatched Tenderness

Purple Passion is a stunning heirloom asparagus variety that produces large, deep purple spears with a naturally sweet, nutty flavor, setting it apart from standard green varieties. With up to 20% more sugar than green asparagus and less lignin in the stalks, Purple Passion delivers a noticeably sweeter flavor and more tender texture — delicious eaten raw or cooked. A long-lived perennial that, once established, will produce for 15–20+ years. Expect your first harvest 2–3 years after planting as the crowns establish.

Tip: Avoid cooking in aluminum pans. Place freshly harvested spears immediately in water to preserve moisture and crispness.

Why Grow Purple Passion?

  • Stunning deep purple spears — visually striking in the garden and on the plate
  • Up to 20% more sugar — noticeably sweeter than green asparagus
  • Less lignin — more tender texture throughout the spear
  • Delicious raw or cooked — exceptional fresh eating quality
  • Long-lived perennial — plant once, harvest for 15–20+ years
  • Open-pollinated heirloom — save seed year after year

Growing Notes

Start 12–14 weeks before the last frost or direct sow indoors or outdoors in early spring. Sow seeds ½ inch deep in fertile, well-draining soil. Transplant seedlings outdoors after frost danger has passed. Space plants 12–18 inches apart in rows 4–5 feet apart in full sun. Asparagus requires patience — do not harvest the first 2 years to allow crowns to establish. Begin light harvesting in year 2–3, and full harvests from year 3 onward. Top-dress with compost each fall. Plants will produce for 15–20+ years once established.
