Pocket Star Cherry has one of the best origin stories in the heirloom tomato world. Introduced by Fedco Seeds after being discovered as a chance hybrid by a young farmer growing amongst a crop of non-green tomatoes, it was named after Samuel R. Delanyβs celebrated sci-fi novel βStars In My Pocket Like Grains of Sand.β The variety has since proven true-to-type and exceptionally flavorful β a genuine find that has earned its place in the heirloom canon.
Tall, sturdy indeterminate plants produce abundant yields of 1-inch round cherry tomatoes with thin, sparkly skin and green flesh. When fully ripe, fruits develop a distinctive golden blush at the base β making harvest timing easy to determine. The flavor is excellent and complex: rich and sweet with nice acidity that moves into full tomato flavor. Unlike other green cherries, Pocket Star is beautiful in mixed baskets and consistently pleases growers and tasters alike.
Start indoors 6β8 weeks before last frost. Sow seeds ΒΌ inch deep in fertile, well-draining soil. Transplant outdoors after all frost danger has passed, spacing plants 24β36 inches apart in full sun. Stake or cage tall vines. Water consistently. Harvest when fruits develop golden blush at the base.
