If the Brandywine is the gold standard of heirloom tomatoes, Plaza Latina Giant is its tomatillo equivalent. This unique, large-fruited Mexican heirloom produces huge yields of oblate, apple-green fruits measuring 3–4 inches wide — dramatically larger than standard tomatillo varieties — on tall, vigorous plants that reward gardeners who give them support.
The seed was originally saved from imported Mexican fruit purchased at the Plaza Latina Market in Eugene, Oregon — a genuine market-to-garden heirloom with a great story. Fruits are ripe when they burst through their husks, and they blend beautifully with hot peppers to make traditional Mexican salsa verde. Less prone to dropping fruit at maturity than other tomatillos.
Start indoors 6–8 weeks before last frost. Culture and care are similar to tomatoes. Transplant outdoors after frost danger has passed, spacing plants 24–36 inches apart in full sun. Stake or cage tall plants. Important: Tomatillos will not self-pollinate — plant two or more plants (any tomatillo variety) for good fruit production. Harvest when fruits burst through their husks.
