Pingtung Long Eggplant, Heirloom Seeds

Bring a taste of Taiwan to your summer garden with Pingtung Long eggplant. This open-pollinated heirloom produces slender violet-purple fruit with tender skin and mild, gently sweet flesh. Slice a fresh-picked eggplant into a sizzling stir-fry, roast it until creamy, or grill long halves for a simple garden-to-table side.

Why Grow Pingtung Long?

  • Long, slender purple fruit: Fruits can reach 12–18 inches long and about 1¼ inches wide; harvest smaller for especially tender eating.
  • Mild flavor and tender skin: Young fruit usually needs no peeling. Flavor and texture depend on harvest stage and growing conditions.
  • A warm-season favorite: Well suited to summer growing, with consistent moisture and fertility still important during hot weather.
  • Taiwanese heirloom: Named for Pingtung, Taiwan, and open-pollinated for gardeners interested in saving seed.

Growing Notes

Start indoors 8–10 weeks before your last expected frost. Transplant into warm soil after frost danger has passed, in full sun. Space plants 18–24 inches apart, or allow one plant per 4 square feet in a raised bed. Water consistently and stake plants as needed to support their long fruit.

Expect approximately 65–90 days from transplant to harvest, depending on warmth and the size you pick. Harvest while the skin remains glossy and the fruit feels firm, cutting the stem rather than pulling. Regular picking encourages continued production.
