Peppermint — The Easiest Herb to Grow, With Endless Culinary & Medicinal Uses

Peppermint is the perfect herb for beginning gardeners — vigorous, forgiving, and endlessly useful. Purple-tinged leaves with distinct veins and toothed edges are used in teas, iced drinks, cooking, and a wide range of medicinal applications. Plants grow 24 inches tall or more with attractive purplish, square stems and produce small pink, white, or purple flowers from July to September that attract pollinators. A hardy perennial that returns reliably year after year. One important note: mint family plants root vigorously and can spread aggressively — grow in containers to keep them beautifully in check.

Why Grow Peppermint?

  • Easiest herb to grow — perfect for beginners, nearly foolproof
  • Culinary & medicinal uses — teas, iced drinks, cooking & natural remedies
  • Beautiful purple-tinged foliage — attractive in containers and herb gardens
  • July–September blooms — small pink, white & purple flowers attract pollinators
  • Hardy perennial — returns reliably year after year in zones 3–10
  • Container-friendly — grow in pots to control vigorous spreading

Growing Notes

Start indoors 8–10 weeks before last frost. Surface sow — seeds need light to germinate. Keep soil consistently moist at 65–70°F. Transplant outdoors after frost danger has passed in full sun to part shade. Peppermint prefers consistently moist soil. Grow in containers to prevent invasive spreading. Harvest leaves as needed — regular harvesting encourages bushy growth. Cut back after flowering to promote fresh foliage.
