Pak Choi Purple Gem F1 Seeds — Anthocyanin-Rich Purple Bok Choy | Cold-Enhanced Color, Baby Leaf & Microgreen Premier

Purple Gem F1 (Brassica rapa subsp. chinensis) is an excellent variety for baby leaf, microgreens, and full-size harvest. The leaves are purple-red and oval-shaped with a mild flavor that mixes beautifully with other baby greens and microgreen blends. As temperatures drop to 50–60°F, the anthocyanin pigmentation deepens — making fall-grown Purple Gem both more colorful and more nutrient-dense. Non-GMO F1 hybrid, cool-season annual. 10–15 days microgreens; 20–30 days baby leaf; 45 days full maturity.

The Anthocyanin Advantage

Purple Gem’s pigmentation is not cosmetic — it signals genuine nutritional density. Anthocyanins, the same antioxidant compounds found in blueberries and red cabbage, provide antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits. Growing temperatures of 50–60°F are adequate to develop anthocyanin color after germination — cool nights build these qualities throughout the harvest window, making fall the premier season for this variety.

Why Grow Purple Gem F1?

  • Triple harvest window — microgreens at 10–15 days, baby leaf at 20–30 days, full head at 45 days
  • Striking visual impact — deep purple-red oval leaves; exceptional color on the plate, in salads, and in the garden
  • Anthocyanin-rich nutrition — antioxidants, anti-inflammatory compounds, vitamins C, K, A, and brassica glucosinolates
  • Cold-enhanced color and nutrition — 50–60°F growing temps deepen color; fall crops are the most nutritious and most beautiful
  • Excellent for microgreen and baby leaf mixes — mild flavor blends well with other greens
  • Compact and versatile — ideal for raised beds, containers, and intensive plantings
  • Improved bolt resistance — F1 hybrid breeding enhances bolt tolerance vs. open-pollinated purple types

In the Kitchen

  • Baby leaf salad: Harvest at 20–30 days for mild, tender leaves that mix beautifully with other baby greens
  • Microgreens: Harvest at 10–15 days for vivid purple-red color and concentrated nutrition as a garnish or mix-in
  • Raw salads & slaws: Crisp texture and vivid color; excellent with sesame dressing and rice vinegar
  • Quick pickling: Sliced stems turn pink-magenta in rice vinegar, sugar, and salt — stunning garnish for ramen and grain bowls
  • Stir-fry: Add at the end of cooking for color and crispness
  • Steamed: Halve, steam briefly, dress with sesame oil and soy sauce
  • Braised: Braise in broth with garlic and ginger for a tender, flavorful side

Growing Notes

Prepare fertile, well-drained soil. Sow seeds in spring after last frost through early summer, or late summer/early fall for fall harvest. Keep soil moist. Fertilize as needed. Optimum growing temperature is in the 60s°F. Exposure to frost or prolonged temperatures below 50°F may result in bolting. Mulch fall crops to avoid premature bolting.

Anthocyanin color development: Growing temperatures of 50–60°F after germination are adequate to develop the purple “anthocyan” color. The grower should trial different methods and observe how the plant reacts — color intensity varies with temperature exposure duration.
