Opalescent — The African Landrace × Purple Basil Cross That Grows 30" Tall and Tints Your Dishes Pink-Purple

Opalescent is a beautiful and distinctive dark purple basil with a refreshing flavor profile unlike standard sweet basil — the result of crossing an African landrace basil with a purple basil type. Plants grow quite large, reaching up to 30 inches tall with long, elegant stems that benefit from staking. As versatile as it is striking, Opalescent can be used as an ornamental plant and a culinary herb, adding a distinct flavor and a gorgeous pink-purple tint to vinegars, salads, pestos, and dishes wherever it’s used. A standout in both the garden and the kitchen.

Why Grow Opalescent Basil?

  • Unique African landrace cross — African landrace × purple basil, a truly distinctive variety
  • Dark purple, 30" tall plants — dramatic garden presence, long elegant stems
  • Refreshing flavor profile — distinct from standard sweet basil
  • Pink-purple tint to dishes — stunning in vinegars, salads & pestos
  • Ornamental & culinary — beautiful in the garden and the kitchen
  • Open-pollinated heirloom — save seed year after year

Growing Notes

Start indoors 4–6 weeks before last frost. Sow seeds ⅛ inch deep in fertile, well-draining soil. Transplant outdoors after all frost danger has passed and nights are consistently above 50°F, spacing plants 18–24 inches apart in full sun. Plants grow up to 30 inches tall — stake for best results. Pinch off flower buds as they appear to encourage bushy growth and continued leaf production. Harvest regularly for best flavor and productivity. Cold temperatures cause blackening of leaves.
