The Oat and Pea Cover Crop Seed Mix is a classic, time-tested combination for gardeners and small-scale farmers who want to build healthier soil without synthetic inputs. Sow it in spring, summer, or fall and let it do the work: peas fix nitrogen from the air while oats provide structure, biomass, and weed suppression. When it's time to terminate, this mix winter-kills in most zones — making it one of the easiest cover crops for beginners and experienced growers alike.
Mix Composition: 70% Dun Peas (Pisum sativum subsp. arvense) · 30% Oats (Avena sativa)
About 435 seeds per ounce. Sow at 5 lbs per 1,000 sq ft (120–200 lbs/acre).
Broadcast seed and lightly rake into the soil, or plant up to 2 inches deep. Water in heavily at planting and regularly if rainfall is insufficient. Sow in early spring before a late garden or cash crop, or in late summer/fall to winter-kill after your main crops.
For best results, use with a Legume Inoculant: mix 0.05 oz inoculant powder with 0.25 tbsp water, roll seeds in the mixture, and plant within 12 hours. Inoculant not included.
This mix will winter-kill in USDA Zones 2–7 (and often Zone 8), making termination effortless in most climates. For spring or summer plantings, or in warmer zones, terminate using organic methods: winter-killing, crimping, or tillage. Cut down before the oats go to seed to prevent reseeding. Wait 2–3 weeks after termination before planting your next crop.
Tip from our gardeners: "This is the perfect cover crop for heavy nitrogen feeders. If you plan to plant broccoli, tomatoes, okra, pumpkins, or any other nitrogen-hungry crop, this is the optimal choice to precede them. It will ultimately reduce your fertilizer use."

The seeds arrived around the estimated time of arrival. They were well packaged and looked good. I planted a few 3 days ago and I've already got sprouts.
I hope these flowers will grow in North Dakota! The colors are vibrant and hopefully the bees will like them. I will have to wait until after the Big Thaw in April before I can plant them - can't wait!
