Mizuna (Brassica rapa var. japonica) is the Japanese mustard green that belongs in every salad garden. Dandelion-like jagged-edged leaves with a mild, sweet, earthy flavor β noticeably milder than other mustard greens β make Mizuna the perfect gateway into Asian greens. It grows faster than almost anything else in the cool-season garden, withstands heat longer than lettuce, and is slow to bolt. A true cut-and-come-again plant that keeps producing all season. Harvest baby greens in just 10 days, tender full leaves at 30 days, or use as a microgreen for a harvest in under a week. Excellent raw in salads, wilted in stir-fries, or added to soups.
Direct sow outdoors 4β6 weeks before last frost or in late summer for fall harvest. Sow seeds ΒΌ inch deep, 1β2 inches apart. Thin to 6 inches for full plants. Full sun to part shade. Water consistently. Harvest outer leaves continuously or cut whole plant at soil level for baby greens.
