Mesclun — from the Provençal word for “mixture” — is the original gourmet salad concept: a beautiful blend of young greens in contrasting colors, textures, and flavors that makes every salad a visual and culinary event. This heirloom mix includes a variety of leaf lettuces, arugula, spinach, and endive — a complete palette of flavors from mild and buttery to peppery and slightly bitter. Harvest young at the baby leaf stage for a ready-made salad of tender greens, or allow to grow on for a more substantial harvest. 35–75 days.
Direct sow outdoors 4–6 weeks before the last frost in spring, or 6–8 weeks before the first frost in fall. Scatter seeds on the soil surface and press in lightly — lettuce needs light to germinate. Water consistently. Harvest with scissors at 2–3 inches tall for baby greens, or allow to grow on for full-sized leaves. Succession sow every 2–3 weeks for continuous harvest.
