Mammoth Grey Stripe — The Classic Giant Heirloom Sunflower, 9–12 Feet Tall With 1-Foot Blooms

Mammoth Grey Stripe is the quintessential giant heirloom sunflower — fast, easy, and absolutely spectacular. Enormous yellow blooms with brown centers reach up to 1 foot across, topping plants that grow 9–12 feet tall and yield heavy loads of edible seeds. A natural pollinator magnet, Mammoth Grey Stripe attracts butterflies and birds throughout the season, and the seed-heavy heads become a favorite feeding station for birds in late summer and fall. Excellent for creating a tall annual hedge or privacy screen, and one of the best sunflowers for kids’ gardens — fast-germinating (5–12 days) and impressively rewarding. Edible seeds make great snacks and can be saved for next year’s planting.

Why Grow Mammoth Grey Stripe?

  • 9–12 feet tall — a true giant, spectacular in any garden
  • Up to 1-foot blooms — enormous yellow flowers with brown centers
  • Heavy edible seed loads — great for snacking, bird feeding & seed saving
  • Pollinator magnet — attracts butterflies and birds all season
  • Fast-germinating — sprouts in 5–12 days, great for kids’ gardens
  • Excellent privacy screen or hedge — tall, dense annual barrier

Growing Notes

Direct sow outdoors after last frost. Sow seeds 1 inch deep, 6 inches apart, in full sun. Thin seedlings to 2 feet apart when about 3 inches tall. Water consistently — daily watering encourages faster growth. To save seeds, cut the stem beneath the flower head when the back of the head turns yellow. Hang upside down in a cool, dry place for about a month, covered with netting or a paper bag with holes to catch falling seeds.
