Long Scarlet (Raphanus sativus) β also known as Cincinnati Market β is a historic heirloom first described in the 1907 Landreth & Sons catalog and now becoming genuinely scarce. Long, tapered, deep red roots grow 6β7 inches with crisp, tender white flesh and medium tops perfect for bunching. A very heavy-yielding variety, excellent for home gardens and market. The 1935 Isabell Seed Catalog said it best: βThe finest long red radishβ¦ no finer radishes go into any market. Grows perfectly straight and smooth, 6 to 7 inches in length. Skin scarlet-colored, very thin, the flesh crisp, brittle, and of a delightful flavor. Ready for the market in 35 days.β
Direct sow outdoors in early spring or fall. Sow seeds Β½ inch deep, 1 inch apart, in rows 6β8 inches apart. Thin to 2 inches. Full sun. Keep soil consistently moist. Harvest at 35 days when roots reach 6β7 inches. Succession sow every 1β2 weeks for continuous harvest.
