Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis) is one of the most rewarding herbs you can grow — beautiful, fragrant, useful, and beloved by pollinators. The heart-shaped leaves release a fresh, lemony scent when brushed, and the small white flowers are irresistible to bees and hummingbirds. Plants grow 12–24 inches tall and 12–18 inches wide, forming lush, full mounds of aromatic foliage that can be harvested at any time. Traditionally valued as a medicinal herb since ancient times, lemon balm has been used for centuries to support calm, sleep, and digestion. Deer resistant and easy to grow from seed.
A perennial in zones 4–9 — plant once and enjoy for years. Grown as an annual in colder climates.
Sow seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before last frost, or direct sow in early spring or early fall. Surface sow — lemon balm needs light to germinate. Thin to 18–24 inches apart in full sun to part shade with well-draining soil. Germinates in 10–14 days. Water consistently until established; drought tolerant once mature. Cut back after flowering to encourage fresh growth and prevent self-seeding. Perennial in zones 4–9; grow as annual in colder zones.
