Munstead Lavender — The Northern-Hardy Dwarf English Lavender With the Richest Essential Oils

Munstead Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) is one of the best English Lavender varieties available — a northern-hardy dwarf strain that bears thick racemes of beautiful blue flowers earlier than most. English Lavender produces one of the richest essential oils of any plant, meaning exceptional fragrance power both fresh and dried. Munstead is prized for its compact habit (12–18 inches tall, up to 24 inches wide), strongly scented foliage, and earlier blooming flowers. The fresh leaves and flowers are beloved for their relaxing scent and are used in culinary applications — soothing teas, baking, homemade butter, cakes, and sweets — as well as in soaps, sachets, potpourris, and perfumes. Bees and butterflies love it.

Why Grow Munstead Lavender?

  • Northern-hardy dwarf strain — compact, cold-tolerant, and earlier blooming than most
  • Richest essential oils — exceptional fragrance power fresh and dried
  • Culinary & medicinal uses — teas, baking, butter, cakes & sweets
  • Craft & home uses — soaps, sachets, potpourris & perfumes
  • Bee & butterfly magnet — outstanding pollinator value
  • Open-pollinated heirloom perennial — returns reliably year after year

Growing Notes

Start indoors 6–8 weeks before last frost. Surface sow — lavender seeds need light to germinate. Keep soil consistently moist at 65–70°F until germination. Transplant outdoors after frost danger has passed, spacing plants 18–24 inches apart in full sun with well-draining, lean soil. Lavender prefers dry conditions once established — avoid over watering and rich soil. Trim lightly after flowering to maintain compact shape. Strongly scented foliage as well as blooms.
