American Flag Leek — also known as Scotch Flag and Giant Musselburgh — is a classic Scottish heirloom introduced in the 1830s and still one of the finest leeks available. Very winter-hardy blue-green stalks grow 7–10 inches long and 1½ inches in diameter, with a delicious, sweet, mild onion flavor that makes them exceptional in soups, stews, stir-fries, and salads. A standard variety for home and market gardeners because it grows very uniformly — beautiful, consistent harvests every time. Hardy to Zone 3, biennial grown as an annual. 130 days.
Start indoors 10–12 weeks before last frost. Sow seeds ⅛ inch deep in fertile, well-draining soil. Transplant outdoors after last frost, spacing plants 6 inches apart in rows 12 inches apart in full sun. Transplant into deep holes or trenches and backfill gradually to blanch the stalks white. Water consistently. Harvest when stalks reach desired size — leeks can be left in the ground through light frosts for extended harvest.
