Katanya Watermelon, Heirloom Seeds — The Russian Icebox Heirloom With Dark Skin, Salmon-Pink Flesh, and Prolific Vines

Katanya (Citrullus lanatus) is a Russian heirloom icebox watermelon — originally from a woman named Katanya in northern Illinois — with round fruits reaching 10–15 pounds and averaging 10 inches in diameter. Dark greenish-black skin with very sweet, crisp, salmon-pink flesh. Early and prolific, with sturdy vines producing melons well into fall and cooler weather. Comparable to Blacktail Mountain but with larger fruit. One of the best-tasting smaller watermelons available. Watermelon aficionados know that Russian watermelons are something special.

Why Grow Katanya?

  • Russian heirloom icebox type — one of the best-tasting smaller watermelons
  • Dark greenish-black skin — striking and distinctive
  • Very sweet, crisp, salmon-pink flesh — exceptional flavor
  • Early and prolific — sturdy vines producing well into fall
  • Comparable to Blacktail Mountain — but with larger 10–15 lb fruits
  • Open-pollinated heirloom — save seed year after year

Growing Notes

Start indoors 3–4 weeks before last frost. Transplant outdoors after all frost danger has passed into warm soil in full sun. Space plants 3–4 feet apart — needs moderate space, less than larger varieties. Water consistently. Harvest when the belly turns yellow and the tendril nearest the fruit dries.
