Ishikura is the bunching onion that redefines what a green onion can be. Unlike standard types that require succession sowing every three weeks, Ishikura’s exceptionally long harvest window — May through October when sown March through July — means you plant once and harvest continuously with zero waste. No bulbing, no bolting, no fuss.
Long, white, tender stalks grow pencil-thin for spring onion use or can be left to thicken to carrot-width without losing any flavor. Cold hardy and adaptable to virtually any climate, Ishikura is equally at home in raised beds, containers, or open garden rows.
Sow directly outdoors from March through July for a May–October harvest. Sow seeds ¼ inch deep in fertile, well-drained soil, 1 inch apart in rows 12 inches apart. Thin to 2–3 inches for full-sized stalks. For long, white, blanched stems, mound soil up around the base of plants as they grow (earthing-up method). Water consistently. Harvest at any stage — leaves for salads or whole plants pulled at any size.
