Hopi Orange — The Rare, Large-Fruited Keeper With Exceptional Baking and Roasting Flavor

Hopi Orange is the large, reddish-orange winter squash that is increasingly hard to find — and worth seeking out. Dark orange fruits weigh 12–15 pounds and have yellow-to-orange flesh with an excellent, rich flavor, making it one of the finest baking, roasting, and soup squashes available. An excellent keeper with a vining habit, Hopi Orange is a very hardy variety that rewards patient gardeners with a substantial harvest of beautiful, flavorful squash that stores well through the winter months.

Why Grow Hopi Orange?

  • Rare & increasingly hard to find — a variety worth preserving and growing
  • Large, dark orange fruits — 12–15 pounds with rich yellow-orange flesh
  • Exceptional flavor — excellent for baking, roasting, soups & pies
  • Excellent keeper — stores well through winter
  • Very hardy — reliable and productive vining habit
  • Open-pollinated heirloom — save seed year after year

Growing Notes

Direct sow outdoors after last frost when soil has warmed to at least 65°F, or start indoors 3–4 weeks before last frost. Sow seeds 1 inch deep in fertile, well-draining soil. Space plants 36–48 inches apart in full sun — provide ample room for vines. Water consistently. Harvest when the rind is hard and fully colored. Cure in a warm, dry location for 2–3 weeks before storage for best flavor and shelf life.
