Hillbilly — The West Virginia Heirloom With Huge Orange-Yellow Streaked Beefsteak Fruits and Low-Acid Flavor

Hillbilly is an old heirloom from the hills of West Virginia — and they know a superb tomato when they see one. Huge, mild-flavored beefsteak-type fruits weigh 1 to 2 pounds apiece and are colored a most unusual orange-yellow, streaked and mottled in attractive shades of red and pink. A low-acid ancient variety with red, yellow, and orange flesh that delivers exceptional mild flavor — perfect for fresh eating, slicing, and anyone who finds standard tomatoes too acidic. Indeterminate vines produce generously through the season.

Why Grow Hillbilly?

  • West Virginia heirloom heritage — an ancient variety with deep Appalachian roots
  • Huge 1–2 lb fruits — impressive beefsteak size
  • Unusual orange-yellow color — streaked and mottled with red and pink
  • Low acid — mild, gentle flavor ideal for sensitive palates
  • Red, yellow & orange flesh — beautiful and flavorful inside
  • Open-pollinated heirloom — save seed year after year

Growing Notes

Start indoors 6–8 weeks before last frost. Sow seeds ¼ inch deep in fertile, well-draining soil. Transplant outdoors after all frost danger has passed, spacing plants 24–36 inches apart in full sun. Stake or cage — indeterminate vines need support. Water consistently. Harvest when fruits are fully colored and give slightly to gentle pressure.
