Hearts of Gold Cantaloupe, Heirloom Seeds — The 1890s Midwest Commercial Standard With Luscious Deep-Orange Flesh

Hearts of Gold (Cucumis melo) is an orange-fleshed muskmelon dating back to around 1890 — once the most popular commercial cantaloupe in the Midwest. Large, oval, ribbed fruits weigh 4–5 pounds with luscious deep-orange golden flesh that is sweet, juicy, and intensely fragrant. The seed cavity is relatively small for the size of the fruit. Short shelf life — best enjoyed fresh at peak ripeness. 85 days.

Why Grow Hearts of Gold?

  • 1890s Midwest commercial standard — once the most popular cantaloupe in the region
  • Luscious deep-orange golden flesh — sweet, juicy, and intensely fragrant
  • Large 4–5 lb oval ribbed fruits — impressive size with small seed cavity
  • So good a whole melon disappears in one sitting — exceptional eating quality
  • Open-pollinated heirloom — save seed year after year

Growing Notes

Start indoors 3–4 weeks before last frost. Transplant outdoors after all frost danger has passed into warm soil in full sun. Space plants 3–4 feet apart. Water consistently. Harvest when rind turns golden and melon slips from vine. Short shelf life — enjoy fresh.
