Hales Best Jumbo (Cucumis melo) is one of America’s most beloved heirloom cantaloupes — a variety with a rich history and exceptional flavor that has made it a home garden staple for over a century. Introduced by Japanese immigrant farmers in California’s San Joaquin Valley in the 1920s and named after farmer C.C. Hales who helped popularize it, the Jumbo version produces large oval, heavily ribbed and netted fruits that can reach up to 6 pounds. The bright orange, fine-textured flesh is intensely sweet and aromatic with a small seed cavity. The thick netted rind is unusually firm for a cantaloupe — making it well suited for shipping and handling. Reliably productive even in challenging conditions. 85–110 days.
Hales Best Jumbo is exceptional fresh — chilled, halved, and eaten out of hand. The classic pairing of prosciutto and cantaloupe is outstanding with this variety’s deep sweetness. Cube into fruit salads, blend into chilled melon soup or agua fresca, or serve sliced on a platter at farmers markets where the aroma alone draws a crowd. The thick rind holds up well for transport. Best enjoyed at peak freshness — short shelf life once fully ripe.
Hales Best Jumbo is ready when the stem reaches the “slip stage” — it detaches from the fruit with a gentle tug. The rind will shift from green to a tan-yellow color and the netting becomes more pronounced. Gently twist the melon off the vine; if it resists, give it a few more days. Key tip: reduce watering in the final 1–2 weeks before harvest to concentrate sugars and intensify sweetness. Do not over-water at this stage.
Good companions: corn, marigolds, nasturtiums, and radishes — help deter pests and attract pollinators. Avoid planting near potatoes or cucumbers — they share similar pests and diseases. Cantaloupes require bees for pollination (monoecious plants — separate male and female flowers on the same plant). Plant flowers nearby to attract pollinators and improve fruit set.
Direct sow ½–1 inch deep, 1–2 weeks after last frost when soil reaches 65–70°F. Plant 2–3 seeds per hill, spaced 24 inches apart in rows 4–6 feet apart; thin to the strongest seedling. For cooler climates, start indoors 2–4 weeks before last frost — avoid extended time in containers as melon roots are sensitive to transplanting. Harden off before transplanting outdoors. Amend soil with compost or well-rotted manure before planting. Apply balanced fertilizer (5-10-10) once vines start running and again at fruit set — switch to phosphorus/potassium-heavy fertilizer to support fruit development. Water evenly 1–2 inches per week; reduce as fruits near ripeness. For trellis growing, support fruits with fabric or netting slings to bear the weight.
