Greek Oregano is the true oregano of Mediterranean cooking — and it is noticeably more intense than the common Italian variety. A bushy perennial herb with attractive deep purple-brown stems and 1½ inch broadly ovate leaves that often carry a beautiful red flush, Greek Oregano produces branched clusters of purple-pink flowers all summer long. The flavor is stronger and the aroma more pungent than regular oregano, meaning you can use less to achieve the same depth of flavor in your favorite recipes. Grown for both culinary use and its essential oil, Greek Oregano is also valued as a medicinal herb with a long history in traditional medicine.
Grows to 18 inches tall and wide — excellent in containers where it can spill beautifully over the edge of a pot or low wall. Easy to grow from seed with little maintenance required.
Start indoors 6–8 weeks before last frost. Surface sow — seeds need light to germinate. Transplant outdoors after frost danger has passed, spacing plants 12–18 inches apart in full sun with well-draining soil. Water consistently but avoid overwatering — Greek oregano prefers slightly dry conditions. Harvest leaves regularly to encourage bushy growth. Cut back after flowering to promote fresh foliage. Perennial in zones 5–10; grow as annual in colder climates. Excellent indoors on a sunny windowsill.
