Golden Midget — The Miniature Heirloom Watermelon With a Built-In Ripeness Indicator

Golden Midget is one of the most extraordinary watermelons you can grow — and one of the most practical. When the rind turns from green to golden yellow, the watermelon is perfectly ripe — no thumping, no guessing. Inside, the flesh is sweet, crisp, and juicy pink, delivering the full watermelon experience in a beautiful 3-pound miniature package. A heavy producer and very early crop at just 70 days, Golden Midget is ideal for smaller gardens, containers, and short-season climates. A truly remarkable heirloom.

Note: Some yellow foliage is normal for this variety — don’t be alarmed.

Why Grow Golden Midget?

  • Built-in ripeness indicator — rind turns golden yellow when perfectly ripe, no guessing
  • Sweet, crisp, juicy pink flesh — full watermelon flavor in miniature form
  • 3-pound miniature fruits — perfect for small gardens, containers & short seasons
  • Heavy producer — prolific yields through the season
  • Very early — 70 days — one of the earliest watermelons available
  • Open-pollinated heirloom — save seed year after year

Growing Notes

Start indoors 3–4 weeks before last frost, or direct sow outdoors after last frost when soil has warmed to at least 70°F. Sow seeds 1 inch deep. Space plants 36–48 inches apart in full sun with fertile, well-draining soil. Water consistently and deeply. Harvest when rind turns fully golden yellow — the built-in ripeness indicator takes all the guesswork out. Some yellow foliage is normal for this variety.
