Frisé Rouge Kale — Striking Purple Stems That Intensify With Cold, Sweeter After Frost

Frisé Rouge is one of the most visually stunning kales you can grow — and one of the most rewarding. Dark, somewhat glossy leaves with dramatic dark purple stems and veins grow 2–3 feet tall, with relatively large leaf size and long petioles that make for handsome, market-worthy bunches. The flavor is rich and hearty, packed with antioxidants — and cold weather only makes it better. As temperatures drop, Frisé Rouge becomes sweeter-tasting and more intensely colored, making it a standout in the fall and winter garden.

A true superfood kale with exceptional visual appeal and outstanding nutritional density.

Why Grow Frisé Rouge Kale?

  • Striking dark purple stems & veins — intensify in color as temperatures drop
  • Sweeter after frost — cold weather improves both flavor and color
  • Large, glossy leaves — long petioles make handsome market bunches
  • 2–3 feet tall — impressive, productive plants
  • Superfood nutrition — 684% RDA vitamin K, 206% vitamin A, 134% vitamin C per cup
  • Open-pollinated heirloom — save seed year after year

Growing Notes

Start indoors 4–6 weeks before last frost for a spring crop, or in midsummer for a fall/winter harvest. Transplant outdoors when seedlings are 4–6 inches tall, spacing plants 12–18 inches apart in full sun to part shade. Water consistently. Harvest outer leaves regularly for continuous production. Flavor and color peak after the first frost — leave plants in the garden through winter in mild climates.
