Forellenschluss, Heirloom Romaine Lettuce Seeds — The Austrian “Speckled Trout Back” Romaine With Stunning Red Spots

Forellenschluss (Lactuca sativa) — German for “trout’s back” — is a stunning Austrian heirloom romaine with bright green leaves dramatically speckled with deep red spots, resembling the markings of a trout. Crisp, upright heads with excellent flavor. One of the most beautiful lettuces you can grow. Slow to bolt and heat tolerant. Open-pollinated and non-GMO.

Why Grow Forellenschluss?

  • Stunning red-speckled leaves — one of the most beautiful lettuces in the garden
  • Austrian heirloom — centuries of European heritage
  • Crisp, upright romaine heads — excellent flavor and texture
  • Slow to bolt and heat tolerant — extended harvest season
  • Open-pollinated heirloom — save seed year after year

Growing Notes

Direct sow outdoors in early spring or fall, or start indoors 4–6 weeks before last frost. Sow seeds ¼ inch deep, thinning to 8–10 inches apart. Prefers cool weather. Water consistently. Harvest when heads are firm and full.
