Bring the first big tomato slices of the season to your table with Fireworks. This early red slicer pairs full tomato flavor with round, meaty fruit that often finishes in a small pointed tip. Indeterminate vines give the plant room to keep growing and setting fruit while conditions remain favorable, making it a useful choice for supported raised beds and roomy containers.
Layer freshly picked slices onto a sandwich, combine with basil in a summer salad, or serve with a little salt to enjoy their tomato flavor. Extra ripe fruit works well in cooked sauces. The ripe fruit is red, not a red-and-yellow striped type.
Start seeds indoors approximately 6–8 weeks before your expected transplant date. Sow ¼ inch deep in well-drained seed-starting mix, keep evenly moist, and provide strong light after emergence. Pot on as needed, then harden seedlings off gradually before planting outdoors after frost danger has passed and soil has warmed.
Choose full sun and fertile, well-drained soil. Space plants approximately 24–36 inches apart and install a sturdy tall cage, stake, or trellis at planting time. Guide and tie stems as they grow to keep fruit supported and foliage off the soil. For containers, use a roomy pot with drainage and a firmly anchored support.
For square foot gardening, allow 1 plant per 4 sq ft (sturdy support required), with extra canopy room as needed. Water deeply and consistently at soil level, mulch once the soil is warm, and feed according to fertilizer directions. Early maturity is not frost tolerance; protect plants from freezing temperatures.
Maturity: Approximately 50–60 days from transplant; conditions affect timing.
Fruit: Red globes, often with a small pointed tip; commonly 6–12 ounces.
Flavor: Full tomato flavor for fresh slicing and cooking.
Growth habit: Indeterminate; sturdy support required.
Harvest pattern: Continued growth and fruit-setting while conditions remain favorable.
Best uses: Sandwiches, salads, fresh slicing, and cooked sauces.
Botanical name: Solanum lycopersicum.
Seed type: Open-pollinated heirloom, non-GMO; grown as a warm-season annual.
Seeds per packet: Approximately 25+ or 50+ seeds, according to the packet option selected.
Harvest when fruit develops full red color and yields slightly to gentle pressure. Support the vine while picking and handle ripe tomatoes gently to avoid bruising.
