Earliana Heirloom Tomato Seeds

Bring a classic early-season tomato to your kitchen garden. Earliana produces red slicing tomatoes with juicy flesh and a pleasing balance of sweetness and tang, perfect for a first summer sandwich or a simple garden salad. Introduced in 1900, this open-pollinated heirloom has a long history of being grown for an early crop.

Why Grow Earliana?

  • Early-season heritage: Developed by George Sparks of Salem, New Jersey, and introduced by Johnson and Stokes in 1900.
  • Useful everyday slicers: Rounded red fruit commonly around 4–6 ounces, with size varying by strain and growing conditions.
  • Classic tomato flavor: Juicy sweet-tart slices for sandwiches, salads, and fresh tomato plates.
  • Indeterminate growth: Supported plants continue growing and setting fruit while conditions remain favorable.
  • Open-pollinated heirloom: A seed-saving choice for gardeners who want to grow a favorite again.

Planting and Growing

Start indoors 6–8 weeks before your intended transplant date. Sow approximately ⅛–¼ inch deep in seed-starting mix, provide warmth and strong light, and harden seedlings off gradually. Transplant after frost danger has passed and soil has warmed, into full sun and fertile, well-drained soil.

Allow approximately 24–36 inches between plants, adjusting for your support and pruning system. Install cages, stakes, or a trellis early. Water consistently at soil level, mulch to conserve moisture, and maintain airflow while retaining healthy foliage to shade developing fruit. Although grown as an early variety, Earliana remains frost-tender and needs warm soil for good establishment.

For square foot gardening, use 1 plant per sq ft (trellis required) only with dedicated vertical training and regular pruning. Allow additional canopy space for caged or multi-stemmed plants.
