Dutchman Heirloom Tomato Seeds

For a generous sandwich slice, Dutchman brings plenty to the table. This old family heirloom produces large pink to dusky pink beefsteaks with sweet flavor, dense, meaty interiors, and relatively few seeds. Serve thick slices on fresh bread, cut wedges for a summer salad, or enjoy a tomato plate with basil and olive oil.

Why Grow Dutchman?

  • Substantial, meaty flesh: Relatively small seed cavities make satisfying slices for sandwiches, burgers, and fresh tomato platters.
  • Large pink beefsteaks: Fruit commonly reaches around 1–2 pounds; some growers report larger specimens approaching 3 pounds. Size varies with conditions and fruit load.
  • Sweet, rich tomato flavor: A fresh-eating choice for gardeners who enjoy a substantial beefsteak.
  • Distinctive flattened shape: Broad, oblate fruit with variable shoulder ribbing and pink to purplish-pink skin tones.
  • Family-heirloom history: Reported to date to the 1920s, Dutchman was commercially introduced by Merlin W. Gleckler in 1958.
  • Indeterminate, open-pollinated: Supported vines continue growing while conditions remain favorable; gardeners can save seed from a favorite variety.

Planting and Growing

Start indoors 6–8 weeks before your intended transplant date. Sow approximately ΒΌ inch deep in seed-starting mix, provide warmth and strong light, and harden seedlings off gradually. Transplant after frost danger has passed and soil has warmed, into full sun and fertile, well-drained soil.

Allow approximately 24–36 inches between plants, adjusting for your support and pruning system. Install sturdy cages, stakes, or a trellis early. Heavy beefsteaks need dependable branch and vine support. Water consistently at soil level, mulch to conserve moisture, and maintain airflow while retaining healthy foliage to shade developing fruit.

For square foot gardening, use 1 plant per sq ft (trellis required) only with dedicated vertical training and regular pruning. Allow additional canopy space for caged or multi-stemmed plants. Large fruit can develop cracks or blemishes, especially after uneven watering or wet weather.
