Dixie Queen (Citrullus lanatus) developed in the 1930s and became a famous old heirloom popular throughout the southern United States. Round, basketball-shaped fruits with light green skin and dark green stripes. Lovely, vibrant red flesh. Grows best in warm soil — start seeds indoors and transplant after last frost. Vines get very long — give plenty of space. 80 days.
Start indoors 3–4 weeks before last frost. Transplant outdoors after all frost danger has passed into warm soil in full sun. Give vines plenty of room to run. Water consistently. Harvest when the belly turns yellow and the tendril nearest the fruit dries.
