Dazzling Blue Kale β€” Hardier Than Lacinato, With Pink Midribs That Intensify in Cold

Dazzling Blue is one of the most visually striking and cold-hardy kales available β€” and it has an exceptional pedigree to match. Bred by Hank Keogh of Avoca Seed Farm and released through the Open Source Seed Initiative (OSSI), this remarkable variety produces brilliant blue-green leaves highlighted with striking pink midribs that intensify in color as temperatures drop. Proven to be especially cold-tolerant and hardier than the traditional Lacinato (dinosaur) kale, Dazzling Blue is a standout in the fall and winter garden both for its beauty and its productivity. 50–60 days.

A true superfood kale with outstanding visual appeal and exceptional nutritional density.

Why Grow Dazzling Blue Kale?

  • Hardier than Lacinato β€” exceptional cold tolerance, outlasts traditional dinosaur kale
  • Pink midribs intensify with cold β€” more beautiful as the season progresses
  • Brilliant blue-green leaves β€” a showpiece in the garden and on the plate
  • OSSI-released variety β€” bred by Hank Keogh of Avoca Seed Farm
  • Superfood nutrition β€” 684% RDA vitamin K, 206% vitamin A, 134% vitamin C per cup
  • Open-pollinated heirloom β€” save seed year after year

Growing Notes

Start indoors 4–6 weeks before last frost for a spring crop, or in midsummer for a fall/winter harvest. Transplant outdoors when seedlings are 4–6 inches tall, spacing plants 12–18 inches apart in full sun to part shade. Water consistently. Harvest outer leaves regularly for continuous production. Flavor and color peak after the first frost β€” leave plants in the garden through winter in mild climates.
