Danvers 126 — The 1947 Heirloom Carrot That Thrives in Heat and Stores Like a Champion

Danvers 126 is an improved strain of the classic Danvers carrot, introduced in 1947 by the Eastern States Farmers Exchange — and it has earned its place as one of the most reliable and widely adapted carrots in the garden. Stocky, broad-shouldered roots reach up to 2 inches in diameter with bright orange color and strong tops that make them easy to pull. The flavor is sweet and rich, and Danvers 126 is heat tolerant and adaptable to many soil types, including heavier soils where other carrots struggle. An excellent variety for canning, freezing, juicing, and long-term storage — a true premier storage carrot. 65–75 days.

Why Grow Danvers 126?

  • 1947 heirloom — introduced by Eastern States Farmers Exchange, proven for 75+ years
  • Stocky 2-inch diameter roots — broad-shouldered with strong tops, easy to pull
  • Heat tolerant — performs well where other carrots struggle
  • Widely adapted — works in many soil types including heavier soils
  • Premier storage carrot — excellent for canning, freezing, juicing & long-term storage
  • Open-pollinated heirloom — save seed year after year

Growing Notes

Sow directly outdoors 2–4 weeks before last frost in a well-prepared, rock-free bed. Sow seeds ⅛ inch deep in shallow furrows. Thin to 2–3 inches apart once seedlings emerge. Succession sow every 2–3 weeks until 60 days before first fall frost for extended harvest. Carrots prefer loose, deep, well-draining soil — Danvers 126 is more forgiving in heavier soils than most varieties.
