Danish Ballhead, Heirloom Cabbage Seeds β€” The 1887 Burpee Classic | Cold-Hardy Fall Cabbage, 8-Inch Blue-Green Heads, Sweet & Delicate Flavor

Danish Ballhead (Brassica oleracea var. capitata) is a legendary heirloom developed by W. Atlee Burpee & Company in 1887. Ideally sown for a fall garden, this cold-hardy variety grows into beautiful blue-green round heads approximately 8 inches in diameter with a very sweet and delicate flavor. Dependable against bolting and splitting. Known for exceptional storage capacity β€” one of the best keeping cabbages available. 100 days to maturity.

Why Grow Danish Ballhead?

  • 1887 Burpee heirloom β€” over 135 years of proven performance in home gardens
  • Beautiful blue-green ballheads β€” round, firm, ~8 inches in diameter; sweet and delicate flavor
  • Cold-hardy fall variety β€” withstands cooler temperatures; ideal for fall garden planting
  • Dependable against bolting and splitting β€” reliable and consistent
  • Excellent storage capacity β€” keeps well into winter in cool storage
  • Open-pollinated heirloom β€” save seed year after year

In the Kitchen

  • Fresh eating: Sweet, delicate flavor excellent raw in salads and slaws
  • Coleslaw: Dense, crisp heads shred beautifully for classic coleslaw
  • Sauerkraut: A traditional choice for lacto-fermented sauerkraut
  • Cooking: Braise, roast, stir-fry, or add to soups and stews
  • Storage: Keep whole heads in a cool, dark location through winter

Growing Notes

Sow Danish Ballhead seeds indoors and transplant after a few weeks when there is no threat of frost, or sow directly outside if the climate is warm enough. Harden off seedlings over a week before transplanting for best results. Add compost to soil at sowing and transplanting. Keep soil very moist throughout the growth period β€” water weekly. Plant in full to partial sun. Space plants 1–2 inches apart with rows 3 inches apart to allow room to flourish. Heads will firm up and reach approximately 8 inches in diameter when ready to harvest. Take out the entire plant including root and stem when harvesting.

Watch for: Aphids and cabbage root maggots. Maintain good garden hygiene and rotate brassicas annually.
