Creole Heirloom Tomato Seeds

Bring a little Louisiana flavor to your summer table. Creole produces firm, juicy red slicing tomatoes on tall, vigorous vines, with the classic tomato flavor that belongs on a thick sandwich or a platter of fresh garden slices. Bred for Louisiana conditions, this open-pollinated heirloom is a worthwhile choice for gardeners growing in warm, humid regions.

Why Grow Creole?

  • Louisiana breeding heritage: The Creole cultivar was released by Louisiana State University in 1969.
  • Classic red slicers: Round, firm fruit, commonly around 3 inches across, makes a satisfying addition to sandwiches and salads.
  • Juicy tomato flavor: Enjoy fresh slices with salt, basil, or a spoonful of your favorite dressing.
  • Suited to warm, humid growing regions: A Southern favorite, though extreme heat can still reduce flowering and fruit set.
  • Indeterminate vines: Tall plants need sturdy support and can continue growing and setting fruit while conditions remain favorable.
  • Open-pollinated heirloom: Suitable for gardeners who enjoy saving seed from a favorite variety.

Planting and Growing

Start indoors 6–8 weeks before your intended transplant date. Sow approximately ΒΌ inch deep in seed-starting mix, provide warmth and strong light, and harden seedlings off gradually. Transplant after frost danger has passed and soil has warmed. Choose full sun and fertile, well-drained soil.

Allow approximately 24–36 inches between plants, adjusting for your support and pruning system. Install a sturdy tall cage, stake, or trellis early. Water consistently at soil level, mulch to conserve moisture, and allow airflow while retaining healthy foliage to shade fruit.

For square foot gardening, use 1 plant per sq ft (trellis required) with dedicated vertical training and regular pruning. Allow additional canopy space for caged or multi-stemmed plants. Heat tolerance does not eliminate the need for irrigation or protect plants from frost.
