Cream of Saskatchewan (Citrullus lanatus) was brought to the Canadian prairies by Russian immigrants and has thrived in cool northern climates ever since. Round, pale green-striped melons reach 4–10 pounds with creamy, yellowish-white flesh and an old-fashioned sweet flavor that is rare and distinctive. Thin rind requires careful handling — best enjoyed fresh. Ripens in August even in short-season gardens. 80–85 days.
Start indoors 3–4 weeks before last frost. Transplant outdoors after all frost danger has passed into warm soil in full sun. Space plants 3–4 feet apart. Water consistently. Thin rind — handle carefully at harvest. Best enjoyed fresh.
