Common Milkweed (Asclepias syriaca) is the essential host plant for monarch butterfly caterpillars β and far more than just a βusefulβ plant. Beautiful bouquets of deep pink to purple blooms make excellent cut flowers. Grows upright 3β4 feet high and 2β2Β½ feet wide with good branching. Easy to grow and spreads readily β best on the gardenβs perimeter or in neglected areas. Perfect for butterfly and meadow gardens. 50+ seeds per packet.
Cold-stratify seeds for 30 days before sowing, or direct sow outdoors in fall for natural stratification. Sow seeds ΒΌ inch deep in full sun. Space plants 18β24 inches apart. Water consistently until established β drought tolerant once established. Spreads by rhizome β best planted on garden perimeter or in wild areas. Monarch caterpillars will feed on foliage β this is a sign of success, not damage.
