Chia (Salvia hispanica) is a small but mighty multipurpose seed with deep roots in Mayan and Aztec culture — the word “chia” literally means strength in the Mayan language. A cousin of the mint plant native to Guatemala and Mexico, chia seeds are a nutritional powerhouse rich in omega-3 fatty acids, fiber, protein, and calcium. Our chia seeds have been tested for microbes and are suitable for microgreens, raw eating, or planting in your garden. Certified Organic.
Chia is a remarkably low-maintenance plant. Hardy in zones 8–11, chia thrives in full sun with good draining soil and light watering. Known as a “fire-following” plant — one of the first to emerge after wildfires — chia is naturally drought-tolerant once established. Plants are self-pollinating, making them easy and reliable for home gardeners. Simply press seeds onto the soil surface; they are so tiny that covering them is sufficient.
Chia seeds are endlessly versatile in sweet and savory dishes. When they contact water, they absorb nearly 10x their weight and form a gel — making them an excellent egg substitute in vegan baking. Mix into morning porridge, yogurt, or granola. Make overnight chia pudding with milk for a nutritious breakfast. Grow as microgreens and use in salads, soups, and sandwiches.
Chia seeds have been prized for thousands of years by the Maya and Aztec civilizations as a fuel source for athletes, runners, and warriors. The Tarahumara tribe of Mexico — famous for their long-distance runners — attribute their endurance to chia seeds. Today, chia is recognized globally as one of the most nutrient-dense functional foods available.
