Chia Seeds – Ancient Superfood for Garden, Kitchen & Microgreens

Chia (Salvia hispanica) is a small but mighty multipurpose seed with deep roots in Mayan and Aztec culture — the word “chia” literally means strength in the Mayan language. A cousin of the mint plant native to Guatemala and Mexico, chia seeds are a nutritional powerhouse rich in omega-3 fatty acids, fiber, protein, and calcium. Our chia seeds have been tested for microbes and are suitable for microgreens, raw eating, or planting in your garden. Certified Organic.

Chia as a Garden Plant

Chia is a remarkably low-maintenance plant. Hardy in zones 8–11, chia thrives in full sun with good draining soil and light watering. Known as a “fire-following” plant — one of the first to emerge after wildfires — chia is naturally drought-tolerant once established. Plants are self-pollinating, making them easy and reliable for home gardeners. Simply press seeds onto the soil surface; they are so tiny that covering them is sufficient.

Growing Tips

  • Zones: 8–11
  • Light: Full sun
  • Soil: Well-draining
  • Planting: Surface sow — press lightly into soil, no deep covering needed
  • Watering: Light watering as plants establish; drought-tolerant once grown
  • Thinning: Thin plants to avoid overcrowding
  • Pollination: Self-pollinating — truly low maintenance
  • Microgreens: Ready to harvest in 7–10 days

Culinary Uses

Chia seeds are endlessly versatile in sweet and savory dishes. When they contact water, they absorb nearly 10x their weight and form a gel — making them an excellent egg substitute in vegan baking. Mix into morning porridge, yogurt, or granola. Make overnight chia pudding with milk for a nutritious breakfast. Grow as microgreens and use in salads, soups, and sandwiches.
